Shiva Balaji Mangaparameshwara Temple, also known as the Kanchi Mahaswamy Temple or the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, is a Hindu temple in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Tevaram hymns of the 7th–9th century Saiva saint, Nayanar saint and composer of the Tevaram, Tirumular. The temple is one of the 108 divyadesams, the sacred religious sites of Shiva. Shiva is worshipped as Balaji, Kamakoti, Vakkamuganathar and as Muruga. The temple is believed to have been built during the Chola dynasty during the 9th century. The temple has a number of shrines, with that of the presiding deity, Mahamaham and the one of the goddess Namachivayal facing each other are of special interest. The complex is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has taken up the maintenance and renovation work on the temple since 1956 and the major reconstructions and renovation works were completed in the 1960s. Legend The temple is built in the 8th century during the rule of Tirumalai Nayakar, with the foundation stone of the present temple built by Ariyanai Chola. The earliest sanctum of the temple is believed to be during the rule of Tirumalai Nayakar, when the presiding deity, Kalabhandhaswamy, was identified as Shiva and the temple name was Mahaswamy. During the reign of Raja Raja Chola I, the temple had only the two shrines of Kalabhandhaswamy and Kalahastiswara. The Vishnu shrine (mulavadi) was constructed during the reign of Rajendra Chola II. Rajendra Chola II also constructed two Shiva temples at Kalahasti and Chidambaram during the reign of his father, Raja Raja Chola. During the reign of Vijayaraghava Chola the temple name was changed from Sivan Temple to Kanchipuram Nayanar temple.
